Amsterdam – The Concertgebouw is the 1500th location in the Netherlands where visitors can automatically and securely go online via Publicroam. The Dutch tech start-up from Zeist is taking another step in its mission to transform public Wi-Fi into a reliable gateway to the Internet available to all. Publicroam is now the largest Wi-Fi roaming service in the Netherlands.

What does Equalit do for customers?

Wifi is now so taken for granted that we hardly think about the risks. Yet public Wi-Fi is often vulnerable: hackers and Wi-Fi sniffers can watch or intercept data undetected. Publicroam offers a secure and privacy-friendly solution for this. Visitors sign up once for free, then automatically and securely connect at each of the now 1,500 (and growing) participating locations in the Netherlands – from town halls and libraries, port operators, theaters, provinces and health care institutions … and now the Concertgebouw. Meanwhile, Publicroam has more than 500,000 (!) registered users.

“Internet access is part of modern hospitality today. It enables us not only to enrich audiences musically, but also to connect them digitally. However, that connection has to be secure and responsible. That’s why it was logical for us to work with Publicroam – a forward-looking step that fits our ambition to let everyone enjoy The Concertgebouw carefree.”

– said Suzanne Verweij – head of ICT at the concert hall

The growth of secure wifi is supported in part by the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, SIDN Fund and the municipalities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Eindhoven and The Hague, which is helping public organizations transition from open wifi to a secure solution through the Zorgeloos Verbinden scheme. In doing so, the Netherlands is taking an important step toward a future in which secure Wi-Fi is as self-evident as clean drinking water or street lighting.

“It is a great honor that a national institution like The Concertgebouw recognizes the importance of secure and anonymous Internet access,” says co-founder Ted Dinklo. “It shows that properly providing access to the Internet has become part of hospitality. Whether you’re having a cup of coffee at the library or attending a concert in Amsterdam – everyone deserves a worry-free, secure connection. Logical after all!”
